Speaker: Trent Walker

"You're so money and you don't even know it."

Mike: I just don't think she liked me in that way.

Trent: Baby, you're so money and you don't even know it.

Mike: Look, Tee, girls don't go for me the way they go for you, okay?

Context

This line is spoken by Trent Walker, played by Vince Vaughn, in the film Swingers, directed by Doug Liman (1996).

While Mike is moping about his bad luck with girls (his girlfriend just broke up with him and he can't seem to meet someone else), Trent tries to give him a little pick-me-up. Trent tells Mike that he is pure money. That's '90s bro slang for saying that he's awesome, amazing, and totally on his game. Trent earns five metaphorical nice guy points for this sentence.

It's too bad that Mike doesn't want to hear what Trent is saying. See, Trent thinks that if Mike had a little more self-confidence, the ladies would be pouring in. Mike isn't so sure. And that, of course, is why he's money, and he doesn't even know it.

Where you've heard it

The term "you're so money" or "that's money," became a pretty popular phrase after Swingers came out. You'll hear it whenever your stuck-in-the-90s friend thinks something or someone is super, über, totally amazeballs. ("Amazeballs" happens to be the slang word that replaced "money." Or so we've been told.)

Additional Notable References:

  • Andy drops this line in an episode of The Office when he tells Ryan that he's "so money." The only problem is that Ryan already knows it.
  • In this Darius Rucker song, his "Homegrown Honey" is "so money."
  • You're So Money makes the perfect title for a book on personal finance.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Yeah, you might sound slightly retro and pretentious telling someone else that they're money, but no one hates a compliment. Use this one as you will.
