Character Analysis

Family Life

Since we've got tons of families in Salem, how folks treat their relatives tells us a lot. So the fact that Ann Putnam Sr. makes her daughter into an evil Mini Me lets us know that this mother-daughter duo is up to no good. And Johnathan's defiance of his pops reminds us that he's a strong-willed chap.

Location

The city of Salem has two parts: the town and the village. When characters live in the town, like the English family, we know that they're on the upper class side of things. And lower class folks who live in the village, like Ann Putnam, are super aware of the difference in class. Since Susanna feels left out sometimes because she's from a different part of Salem, knowing where a character lives gives us a clue about how they fit into the community.

Thoughts and Opinions

When the witch trials are afoot, everyone has an opinion. And we mean everyone. Learning characters's opinions gives us a sneak peek into what they're really thinking and, in doing so, what they're really like. So when we learn that Mama English supports her friends, even when they're called witches, we learn that she's as brave and compassionate as they come.
