Abbot Jethrah Zerchi Timeline and Summary

  • Zerchi tries to fix his Autoscribe to communicate with New Rome. Pounding on it, blowing in it, and cursing at it have no effect. We guess that the Autoscribe doesn't work like a Nintendo cartridge.
  • Zerchi calls Brother Joshua to him. He offers him the job of leading the Church's mission to the space colonies and protecting the Memorabilia. Joshua asks for time to think on it.
  • On their way to dinner, the two run into Mrs. Grales, who offers Zerchi a few coins for his communion box. She also asks the abbot to baptize her "sister," Rachel.
  • At dinner, Zerchi has the members of the space mission called. He also notices an old man in burlap at the beggar's table, smiling at his hope that nuclear war will pass them by.
  • Brother Joshua accepts Zerchi's offer, and Zerchi explains their mission to the group. They've got to ship out to the space colonies… just in case humanity blows itself up again.
  • The monks leave for New Rome to prep for the mission, and a nuclear strike hits near the abbey.
  • Zerchi opens up the abbey to provide aid. He accepts the services of a Dr. Cors under the assumption that Cors will not advise anyone to take advantage of the state-sponsored euthanasia program.
  • Dr. Cors breaks his promise.
  • Zerchi tries to convince a woman to not euthanize herself or her child. After a squabble between Zerchi, the woman, a cop, and Dr. Cors, the woman enters the Green Star Camp to receive euthanasia.
  • Defeated and feeling hopeless, Zerchi returns to the abbey and hears Mrs. Grales's confession.
  • During the confession, a nuclear strike destroys the abbey.
  • Zerchi is buried beneath the ancient stone walls. He ponders his and Dr. Cors's reason for believing in God.
  • Then he sees Rachel, Mrs. Grales's "sister," walking around.
  • Rachel provides Zerchi the sacrament of communion before the abbot dies.
