Mason is Sir Robert's butler. He's the one announcing the guests at the party scene in Act 1. When Sir Robert wants to get rid of Mrs. Cheveley, all he has to do is buzz for Mason. Even a rebel like Mrs. Cheveley won't fight in front of the servants.
