Character Role Analysis

Mr. Hannon

Although Mr. Hannon doesn't stay long in Frank's life, he's really important to him and we'd hazard a guess that he's a father figure of sorts. After all, Mr. Hannon says that Frank was like a son to him and that he cherished every moment he spent with Frank. He teaches Frank how to be a man by giving him his first "real" job but warns Frank that an education matters more than a job.

Mr. O'Halloran

Mr. O'Halloran is the only school teacher Frank likes. He's a kind and fair man who believes (unlike the other teachers) that his students are able to do more than just lay bricks or work in the coal mines. Unfortunately, the social class system doesn't allow the boys to exceed their station in life and he isn't able to help Frank get into secondary school.
