Augustus Coverly

Character Analysis

Augustus is Thomasina's younger brother. He thinks he's all that because he's a student at Eton, England's top prep school, while Thomasina is stuck at home learning from a mere tutor. He doesn't really do much in the play, but his appearance does knock the relationship between Thomasina and Septimus off-kilter, bringing out the issues of gender (what could Thomasina have accomplished if she could have gone to Eton?) and class (Septimus is both older and smarter than Augustus, but the kid can still blow him off because his dad is higher class than Septimus's is).
