Jean Passepartout Timeline and Summary

  • On October 2, 1872, Passepartout is accepted into the employ of Mr. Phileas Fogg as his personal valet.
  • Mr. Fogg comes home that very evening and demands that Passepartout pack a carpetbag—they are leaving on a trip around the world.
  • Phileas entrusts Passepartout with a bag of banknotes containing 20,000 pounds. No pressure.
  • Phileas leaves that evening with Passepartout on a train bound for Paris.
  • Passepartout witnesses Phileas Fogg give money to a poor beggar woman and he's touched at the gesture.
  • Passepartout realizes that he has left the gas burning in his room on Saville Row. Phileas tells him it will burn at his expense.
  • Phileas and Passepartout catch a steamer named the Mongolia in Brindisi and take it via the Suez Canal to Bombay.
  • When the steamer stops at Suez on October 9, Passepartout goes out on deck and talks to Detective Fix (without knowing who he is) about the "around the world" journey.
  • Passepartout enjoys the journey because he has enough to eat and a comfy bed; he also enjoys the scenery.
  • Passepartout thinks Phileas Fogg will give up the journey when they reach Bombay.
  • Fix finds Passepartout several times during the voyage and pumps him for more information about Fogg.
  • Upon reaching Bombay, Passepartout goes out to do some shopping for himself and Fogg and can't help but stroll the streets looking at the scenery.
  • He wanders innocently into an Indian temple (where Christians aren't allowed) and does not take off his shoes, as is the law.
  • Several priests attack him and drive him out of the temple. Passepartout loses his hat, shoes, and packages in the scuffle.
  • He tells Fogg what happened and Fix sneakily overhears it.
  • Fogg and Passepartout take a train bound for Calcutta. The train stops outside of Rothal, and the passengers are forced to disembark because the railway isn't finished.
  • Passepartout almost loses his mind about the inconvenience of the railroad being unfinished.
  • He finds an elephant that might be available to take them through the jungle.
  • Fogg offers to pay a thousand pounds for an elephant that could transport them through the jungle.
  • Sir Francis begs Fogg not to make the deal, but Fogg eventually offers 2,000 and is accepted.
  • Fogg pays a Parsee guide to take them and the elephant through the jungle.
  • Passepartout has the idea to dress up as a dead rajah to rescue a young woman from a suttee.
  • At Allahabad, Passepartout goes shopping for Aouda and Fogg.
  • At Calcutta, Phileas Fogg and Passepartout are escorted to an English court and brought up on charges for Passepartout's antics at the sacred Hindu temple. Passepartout feels really badly because Fogg has to pay a huge fine, but at least Passepartout gets his shoes back.
  • Aboard the steamer the Rangoon, bound for Hong Kong, Passepartout encounters Fix again and has a glass of gin with him.
  • On the steamer, Fix and Passepartout become drinking buddies, and Passepartout thinks he's figured out that Fix is a spy for the Reform club who must be checking up on him and Fogg.
  • Passepartout begins to realize that Aouda is in love with Fogg.
  • The Rangoon encounters stormy seas between Singapore and Hong Kong; Passepartout is really upset by the delay and tries to help the captain and the sailors in order to speed things along.
  • The Rangoon finally docks at Hong Kong on November 4th, and Fogg sends Passepartout to go and reserve three cabins on board the Carnatic, which will take them to Hong Kong in the morning.
  • Passepartout gets the tickets and finds out that the Carnatic leaves that evening instead of tomorrow.
  • Fix invites Passepartout to a tavern to have a drink. Fix tells him he thinks Fogg is the bank robber from England and he will try to arrest him.
  • Passepartout totally freaks out when Fix asks him to help arrest Fogg. Passepartout defends his master, but Fix slips him some opium, which knocks out Passepartout so he will be unable to tell Fogg the change in time of departure for the Carnatic.
  • Hours later, Passepartout stumbles out of the tavern and makes his way to the Carnatic. Some sailors haul him up to his cabin.
  • When Passepartout wakes up, he realizes Fogg and Aouda are not on board. He begins to think about what he will do when he reaches Yokohama. He has no money, so he eats a ton on board the ship, trying to stock up.
  • Passepartout joins a Japanese circus in order to get some money for clothes and food.
  • In Yokohama, Fogg finds Passepartout and rescues him from the Japanese circus.
  • Fogg, Passepartout, Aouda, and Fix board the General Grant to San Francisco.
  • Passepartout sees Fix on the General Grant and gives him a beat down for tricking him in Japan.
  • Fix tells him that he will not harm Fogg or get in his way until they reach England; he will only help.
  • On December 3rd, Fogg reaches San Francisco exactly on time, as he had expected.
  • Fogg and company board a train bound for New York.
  • Passepartout gets seriously ticked off when a herd of buffalo delays the train for three hours.
  • He attends a lecture about the "Latter Day Saints" by a Mormon missionary. He is asked to join the ranks of Brigham Young in Utah and refuses.
  • The train is attacked by Sioux Indians outside of Fort Kearney, and the conductor tells them if the train isn't stopped, they will all be killed.
  • Passepartout goes underneath the train to uncouple the passenger cars from the locomotive.
  • He is captured by the Sioux Indians.
  • After soldiers from the fort come to their rescue and the train pulls to a stop, Fogg goes to rescue Passepartout, who has been taken captive.
  • After finding Passepartout, Fogg agrees to take a wind-sledge to the next stop, Omaha, where he can catch the next train.
  • On the Henrietta, Passepartout makes friends with the sailors and has a great time until the ship gets caught in a hurricane and he's really scared.
  • Upon reaching Liverpool, Fogg is arrested by Detective Fix. Passepartout wants to "blow his brains out" because he feels that it's his fault Fogg is in jail. He never told his master about Fix's plot to arrest him. (Kind of a big deal… oops.)
  • After being released, Fogg thinks he is too late to make good on his original bet; he has lost.
  • Phileas Fogg returns home and shuts himself in his room. Passepartout watches over him, afraid he'll commit suicide.
  • Fogg sends Passepartout for the preacher so he and Aouda can get married tomorrow.
  • Passepartout goes to get the Reverend, but realizes the ceremony can't be performed tomorrow because it will be Sunday.
  • He hastily tells Fogg they miscalculated the day, and that they still have time to get to the club and collect the winnings.
  • Passepartout shoves Fogg in a carriage so he can show up exactly on time, eighty days after he left.
  • Fogg wins the bet and gets married. Passepartout gives the bride away.
  • Fogg shares some of the money with Passepartout, but deducts the money Passepartout cost him by leaving his gas on.
