Character Role Analysis

Faustus

Faustus is supposed to be the long-awaited Wizard of Oz, the one who has all of the answers to life's big questions. But he ends up just being the man behind the green curtain. Faustus is disappointing on pretty much all levels. He refuses to debate Augustine because he knows that he'll lose (V.7.1), he isn't well read, and his arguments are sub-sub-par. After his disappointing encounter with Faustus, Augustine is left with a questionable allegiance to the Manichees. And he's left without a guide on his search for the Truth, until he meets Bishop Ambrose.
