Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
All the characters in the play can be seen as symbolic. Their endless, meaningless conversations and repetitive lives represent in many ways the Absurdist view of human existence. The Smiths, the Martins, the Fire Chief, and Mary, the maid, can all be said to represent all of humanity. Read more on this in "Characters" and "Writing Style."
