Character Role Analysis

Nobody

Ionesco dubbed The Bald Soprano an anti-play. The label definitely fits. This play breaks all the rules. It doesn't fit into any of the standard plot structures. Mainly this is because it lacks a central protagonist. Unlike most plays, nobody wants anything in particular. If the characters do decide they want something, they seem to forget about it a couple of lines later. There's just no central figure pushing the play forward to a thrilling climax. This is all part of the reason we love the play so much. It's great when a piece manages to break all the rules and still totally rock out.
