Dream Angels
- Onward and upward to the third week of May. Lou Ann has finally found a job that spices up her life: packing chilies in the Red Hot Mama's salsa factory.
- At home, Taylor, Turtle, and Dwayne Ray are all being subjected to Lou Ann's newfound love for salsa.
- Taylor has noticed a real boost in Lou Ann's confidence lately. Having a job that she actually likes—and that she's really good at too!—has sky-rocketed Lou Ann's self-esteem.
- Taylor and Lou Ann have a new routine: it involves sitting up late, fanning themselves in the heat, and drinking iced coffee.
- In June, Lou Ann gets a package from Angel, who has moved to Montana. Among the gifts is a letter: Angel wants Lou Ann and Dwayne Ray to come and live with him.
- Oh. And we kind of thought we were rid of him.
- Taylor feels like "the world was coming apart at the gussets" (11.62). Apart from the possibility that Lou Ann might take Dwayne Ray and move away, Mattie is starting to get worried that Immigration agents are going to arrest Estevan and Esperanza.
- Mattie wants to move Estevan and Esperanza to a new safe-house—one in either Oregon or Oklahoma—but she has no way to transport them.
