Bronx Masquerade Chapter 66-70 Summary

Janelle

  • One of the little kids Janelle tutors asks her to marry him. He may only be eight years old, but it's a sweet offer—at least someone thinks she's beautiful.
  • Then again, maybe he's not the only one. The kids in Mr. Ward's class are making Janelle feel better every time she reads a poem.
  • Last time everyone watched her as she read, and she could tell no one even thought about her size.

Open Mike: The Door

  • Janelle's poem is about how her words are a door—when she reads her poems, people can come in and look inside.
  • She used to think she was the only one who didn't like herself, but now she sees they all feel the same way. She really likes looking through all these open doors every Friday.

Tyrone

  • The newspaper issue featuring Mr. Ward's class finally comes out. Yay. And guess who's quoted in it? That's right; it's Tyrone.
  • Mr. Ward brings extra copies of the paper to class, but Tyrone already has his.
  • Tyrone actually calls up the reporter to thank him for writing such a positive story about their class. He also invites him to their end-of-the-year assembly.
  • Who know, maybe they'll get some more good press?

Lupe

  • Lupe has finally gone on a date with Raul, and Janelle wants to hear all about it.
  • Things went well, but that's not what Lupe's worried about right now; she's thinking about college.
  • Mr. Ward says if she works hard she can get into a good college. Lupe's sister tells her she's the smart one. Who knows? Maybe she's right.
  • Lupe knows she's going to have to work hard to get there, but she's prepared to.

Open Mike: Imagine

  • Lupe's poem is about putting away old dreams and memories and opening a new chapter with new possibilities. Yay.
