If we are to believe the main character of this story, we all only need one thing in life – you got it, "a clean, well-lighted place," preferably a clean, well-lighted café. The image of the café is central to the story; we get the feeling that outside of this clean, well-lighted place, the world is nothing but chaos. Come to think of it, that's just how we feel about our favorite coffee shop.
