Mme d'Houdetot

Character Analysis

Keep it Discreet

If Mama is Rousseau's one true love, Mme d'Houdetot is his obsession. Like all of Rousseau's lady friends, we get a very limited perspective into what Mme d'Houdetot is thinking. She's definitely into Rousseau, at least from what Rousseau has to say. But she thinks he's too passionate to keep their relationship on the D.L.: "I am very much afraid your foolishness may cost me my peace of mind," she tells her overeager suitor (9.1.30).

Even more tellingly, Mme d'Houdetot cuts off the relationship as soon as things get too intense. She doesn't want Rousseau hanging around and causing trouble.
