• Alice loves to play with her best friends, Zach and Poppy, but Zach has said he doesn't want to play anymore.
• She agrees to go to East Liverpool with Zach and Poppy on their mission to lay the Queen to rest in a graveyard there. They hop a bus in the middle of the night.
• Alice and her friends abandon the bus after being harassed by Tinshoe Jones, and then they spend the night in a park. Overnight, someone or something trashes their camp.
• Over donuts, Alice and her friends decide to walk to East Liverpool. First she makes her friends promise that they'll catch the bus home that afternoon so they don't get into trouble, though.
• They trudge through the hot sun and clouds of gnats toward East Liverpool. They're momentarily waylaid by a river until Zach decides to pirate a boat.
• On the boat, Alice gets fed up and throws the Queen overboard. Zach rescues it and, after the boat capsizes, they make it back to shore.
• Realizing that they're not going to make the bus, Alice loses her mind a little. Then Poppy spills an embarrassing secret: Alice has a crush on Zach.
• Alice runs off to cry. Zach catches up to her and she admits that she's been thinking a lot about her dead parents. Why haven't they been haunting her? She fears it's because they don't love her.
• The kids regroup over a meal at a diner, and after, they make their way to the local library, which is closed. No problem: Alice breaks in through the window.
• The kids fall asleep in the library and are caught the next morning by a librarian. For a moment, it looks like all is lost until Alice finds a way to break them out.
• Fleeing the library, the kids steal some bikes and pedal off to the cemetery, where they finally lay the Queen to rest.
