Altisidora Timeline and Summary

  • Altisidora first shows up outside Don Quixote's window at the Duke and Duchess' castle. She knows he's listening as she pulls out a lute and starts playing a love song that's clearly about him. Don Quixote, though, swears to never be disloyal to his beautiful Dulcinea del Toboso.
  • The next morning, Altisidora fakes a fainting spell when she sees Don Quixote approaching her. He insists again that he'll never give into her temptations.
  • One night, while Doña Rodriguez is sitting next to Don Quixote's bed, Altisidora listens at the door with the Duchess and overhears the Doña criticizing her bad breath. She runs into the dark room and starts hitting Doña Rodriguez, escaping before anyone can light a candle.
  • When Don Quixote decides to leave the Duke and Duchess's castle in search of more adventures, Altisidora begs him to stay and marry her. He refuses again.
  • On his trip back home from Barcelona, Don Quixote finds himself accosted and led to the Duke and Duchess's castle again, where Altisidora is playing dead in the middle of the courtyard. Don Quixote is told that she died of a broken heart when he refused to return her love.
  • The only way to resurrect Altisidora, apparently, is for Sancho to let people tear hairs out of his beard.
  • While all of this is going on, Altisidora gets bored with playing dead and sits up. Everyone cries that she is alive.
  • Don Quixote takes his leave of her one last time and says again that he can't be with her. Altisidora finally snaps and tells him he's an ugly old man and that she'd never love him. Don Quixote just shrugs and rides away.
