Dulcinea del Toboso Timeline and Summary

  • We first hear about Dulcinea (a.k.a. Aldonza Lorenzo) when Don Quixote chooses her as his beloved. Of course, Aldonza has no clue that she has inspired Don Quixote to embark on his adventures. As far as we know, she still hasn't realized this, even the end of the book.
  • Throughout the book, Don Quixote invokes Dulcinea as the reason he does anything and everything. He even turns down what he thinks are women's sexual advances because of his loyalty to Dulcinea.
  • In Part 2 of the book, Don Quixote thinks that he has finally seen Dulcinea, but she turns out to be an ugly country wench. He and Sancho then decide that an evil wizard must have cast a spell on Dulcinea to make her ugly.
  • When staying with the Duke and Duchess, Don Quixote and Sancho are visited by the magician Merlin (actually one of the Duke's prankster servants), who tells them that Dulcinea's curse will only lift when Sancho has taken 3,300 lashes on his bum.
  • Don Quixote pleads with Sancho and even tries forcing him to take the lashes. But eventually, he just offers Sancho a bunch of money to do it.
  • Don Quixote returns home and falls ill with a fever. He regains his wits and renounces his life as a knight as foolishness without ever actually meeting the real-life inspiration for Dulcinea, Aldonza Lorenzo.
