Character Analysis
After Giovanni has been sentenced to death, David and Hella go the south of France. They get in a fight when Hella thinks that David is shutting her out, and that evening or soon after, he leaves her and goes to Nice.
He roams the bars and eventually finds himself a sailor. The two of them go back to a hotel together, and then spend a few days in each other's company. When Hella arrives and finds the two of them in a bar, the sailor thinks that she has the wrong man. When he realizes that David and she are engaged, he laughs and leaves the two of them alone in their despair.
