Richard Scroop, Archbishop of York

Character Analysis

Richard Scroop (York) is one of the Percy family's associates and a rebel. He appears in Act four, scene four, when he predicts the defeat of the rebel army at Shrewsbury. At the end of the play, King Henry sends Prince John and Westmoreland to York in order to capture the Archbishop and Northumberland.

Snack for the history buffs: In the play, Shakespeare suggests the Archbishop is the brother of William Scroop, Earl of Wiltshire and King Richard II's Lord Treasurer, who was beheaded by Henry in 1399. Technically, he was the cousin, not the brother of the guy who lost his head.
