King Lewis of France

Character Analysis

Lewis (a.k.a. King Louis XI of France) is only in the play long enough to get visits from both Margaret and Warwick… and to change sides. When he's insulted by Edward, he switches his support to Henry's side. He doesn't do much else, but shows us how much back-and-forth there is between the two sides. Even the King of France has trouble sorting it all out.

Lewis also gives us an outsider's perspective. He's not in the thick of it like the rest of the characters are, and even he can see the logic behind both Henry's and Edward's claims to the throne. It's possible that these claims equally legitimate. What to do, then? That's one humdinger.
