Hoot Chapter 21 Summary

  • We finally get to learn Mullet Fingers' real name: Napoleon Bridger. (We like Mullet Fingers better...)
  • Roy and crew make the front page of the newspaper for their demonstration at the construction site.
  • The only downside is that Mullet Fingers' mom made such a scene that he was returned to her and is now back living in the Leep house.
  • Mrs. Eberhardt informs Roy that his father wants to see him before school.
  • Roy doesn't want to be in trouble but his mother assures him that he did nothing wrong.
  • Mr. Eberhardt calls for Roy because there is someone at the door for him.
  • A news reporter wants to talk to him about everything that happened at the groundbreaking ceremony.
  • She throws a bajillion questions at him until he simply states, "Look, I just went there to stand up for the owls. That's all" (21.46).
  • Roy's dad interrupts for a moment and hands something to him. It's the missing folder from the Mother Paula's file; at least it's a copy of it.
  • Mr. Eberhardt instructs Roy to give this to the reporter and she'll know what to do with it.
  • For a moment, Roy asks why he should give it to the reporter and not the Justice Department. And Roy's dad says that this is something that the entire community should know.
  • Roy returns to the reporter and gives her the folder. With his father's advice, he tells her to look for the E.I.S. (a.k.a. Environmental Impact Statement) except it's not there.
  • Mother Paula's either had one and lost it or never had one to begin with.
  • The news reporter is elated to get this information.
  • And Roy knows it's all thanks to his dad.
