I Know This Much is True Chapter 4 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • Thomas is being taken to Hatch because he's a threat to others and to himself.
  • Dominick tries to explain that Thomas isn't dangerous, but the officers won't stray from their orders.
  • At Hatch, the guard frisks both Thomas and Dominick and confiscates Thomas's Bible.
  • Dominick talks to everyone he can, trying to convince them to call Thomas's doctor and not put him in Hatch, but no one listens to him.
  • While arguing with the guards, Dominick realizes he knows the janitor mopping up in the corner: Ralph Drinkwater.
  • Dominick gets nowhere, and they won't let him talk to a doctor or a social worker.
  • When aides take Thomas away, Dominick tries to stop them, but the guards physically restrain Dominick.
  • Dominick starts screaming and resisting, prompting one guard to comment, "This one's crazier than the other one" (4.123), and another to knee Dominick in the huevos.
