Character Analysis

Uncle Phillip is one of Aunt Martha's sons. She bought his freedom, and he lived in Edenton as a freeman.

William is Linda's brother. He escaped to the North after traveling with Mr. Sands, and ends up being active in the abolitionist movement.

Mr. Sands is the white man Linda sleeps with in a plot to gain her freedom. He fathers her children and eventually sets them free—sort of.

Benny is Linda's older child. He is sent north with Uncle Phillip, lives with William, and eventually goes to work in Boston.

Ellen is Linda's younger child. Mr. Sands sends her to live with some cousins, who seem to think that this means she belongs to them.

Mrs. Dodge/Mr. Dodge is the married name of Dr. Flint's daughter, Linda's official mistress, and her husband. They try to get Linda back, but Mrs. Bruce buys them off.

Mrs. Bruce #1 is the English-born woman whose child Linda tends. She's a lovely woman and treats Linda kindly. Mrs. Bruce #2 is also lovely, but American.
