The Great Depression

There's no one person in A Long Way from Chicago who's the Big Bad Wolf, but there is one serious antagonist that messes things up for a lot of the people that Grandma Dowdel cares about: the Great Depression.

The Great Depression wreaks havoc on the country and affects the little town where Grandma Dowdel lives, ruining people's livelihoods and thrusting them into poverty. But she refuses to stop fighting back, and her grandkids help her fight the Great Depression and provide food and compassion to the poor.
