Character Role Analysis

Miles Halter

Duh. Miles—the narrator, the boy in love with the girl, the newbie at the Creek—is clearly the Man with a capital M. Or maybe not. He doesn't necessarily mature a whole lot through the novel, but he does change in significant ways. Going to a new school, losing a close friend, and coming to terms with death and grief will do that to anyone. He's the one we cry with, laugh with (and sometimes at), and root for as he tries to find his way beyond Alaska's death.
