Character Analysis

Dinah is Mariah's best friend who, uh, also happens to be having an affair with Mariah's husband Lewis.

Lucy is not a fan of Dinah or the women she thinks Dinah represents. Besides being a homewrecker, Dinah is vain and stuck on herself, as Lucy observes:

I did not like the kind of women Dinah reminded me of. She was very beautiful and it mattered a great deal to her. (3.14)

Even more offensive to Lucy is the condescending way that Dinah looks down on her as a servant. Little does Dinah know that Lucy gets the last laugh:

It would never have occurred to her that I had sized her up immediately, that I viewed her as a cliché, a something not to be, a something to rise above [. . .] I had to laugh. (3.15)

Besides hinting at what a jerk Dinah is, Lucy's assessment of Dinah shows us how confident Lucy is in refusing to allow more economically-privileged women to make her feel inferior. Yay, Lucy.
