Abyssinia

Oh, Abyssinia—even though you aren't in the first chapter, you are most definitely the star of this show. As soon as Abby's born, she takes center stage: The whole plot is structured around her coming of age, and as life throws lemon after lemon at her, we cross our fingers that she'll be able to turn them into lemonade. Time and again she does (much to our relief), so by the end we're confident she'll keep making her way through life just fine.
