Setting

A Random U.S. Town; Present Day

Seeing as the movie was filmed in 1999, we're going to take that as our "present time," even though a smart phone would definitely have come in handy for our man Leonard.

Leonard wakes up as an anonymous man in an anonymous hotel room in an anonymous city. Memento is all about what we don't know. It doesn't really matter that we never get a name of the fictional city.

We only ever get brief flashes of different locations… which is more than Leonard gets because he only retains a single instance of cityscape at a time (just think if driving around your hometown was like trying to navigate a new city every time—poor Leonard).

The important thing is that we know it's just another city and that, if Teddy is telling the truth, there have been many cities just like it. These cities are just like John G. It doesn't matter what or where they are, just that Leonard is continuing on in them, and using for an end before moving on to the next unknown town.
