Hip grows up brilliant and curious under his hateful father.
His father's conditioning makes him feel he doesn't deserve his talents and isn't good enough.
Hip brilliantly invents gadgets which his father ruins. Disowned, he decides to study engineering.
He seeks popularity in college, and wins it.
Hip is stuck in the Air Force with little to occupy his mind.
He finds something unusual, and tracks it down. It's the anti-gravity generator.
Hip has the anti-gravity gadget taken away from him forever. Gee thanks, Gerry.
He is discredited and almost destroyed by Gerry.
Hip, unstoppable, searches for the inventor of the device (the gestalt)—for seven years.
He nearly succeeds, but Gerry hurts him again, blocking his memory, giving him a command to get sick and die, and landing him in jail.
Hip recalls his memories, with Janie's patient help.
He realizes that popularity isn't the right goal to pursue in life.
