They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Whoever they are, we can't help but wonder what they would think if they met Molly Millions and her vision-enhancing eye augmentation lenses.
Well, we do think Molly's eyes are the windows to her soul. Like a mirror, they reflect the world around them. This world has shaped and changed Molly, both physically with her modifications and emotionally with her attitude. The world she witnesses is technologically advanced, violent, and dangerous; Molly equally so.
Her eyes also symbolize how Molly's lifestyle has made it really tough for her to connect with others. Sure, she does open up to Case and tell him bits and pieces of her past, but when they are having sex, Case is not allowed to touch her eyes (2.80). It's about the only impersonal description in the whole scene. He doesn't even find out "what color her eyes were" as she "never showed [him]" (24.12). We may be going out on a limb here, but we believe knowing your lover's eye color is generally a step in the right direction toward a deeper intimacy. That or we've looped Van Morrison's "Brown-eyed Girl" one too many times on our iPods.
Unfortunately for Molly and Case, no matter how close the two got, the barriers of her world remained up, and her eyes remain hidden.
