Character Role Analysis

Eleanor and Henry Tilney

The Tilney siblings frequently act as guides to Catherine throughout the novel. Both educate her on things like fine art. More importantly, both siblings also help Catherine to mature and grow as a person. Henry in particular helps to verbally explain situations to the naive and inexperienced Catherine. Henry also calls Catherine out on her faulty assumptions. But Eleanor provides an equally crucial behavioral example to Catherine, in contrast to the often wild and unprincipled behavior of Isabella. Eleanor guides Catherine through her action and her manners and ultimately proves a better female friend and role model for Catherine.
