Character Role Analysis

The World

It's easy to point fingers at bully Shanelle, the guy who rats Fatima out to the tip line, or the mob that hangs Jimmi, but in reality, we don't get to know those characters enough to call them our antagonists. Plus, there are many obstacles put in our protagonist's way that have nothing to do with either of those characters. This is why we've chosen the whole stinking world as the antagonist in this book.

It's the world, after all, that leaves Jimmi in a dither after he goes to war, the world that allows for the immigration reform that ships Fatima out of America. It's also the world that mocks Mik and bullies her for being different, that is responsible for the system that creates such rampant poverty. We could go on, but we think you get the idea.
