• Jamie goes AWOL from Buckner and hitches a ride to Portland, where he meets a kid named Branson.
• Jamie moves into Branson's room in a transient hotel called Washington House.
• He writes his brother P to tell him where he is.
• P writes back to say he's dying of cancer, sends Jamie money for a bus ticket, and asks him to come to Memphis to say goodbye.
• Jamie buys a Greyhound ticket and makes it to Idaho before getting jumped in the men's room of the bus station. The bus leaves without him.
• Jamie meets Sam, an eight-year-old video game whiz who asks his mom to give Jamie a ride. She does, and she invites him to stay at their house, but she thinks he's a girl.
• When Sam and his mom go into a gas station, Jamie steals Sam's backpack and runs.
• A lady with a leaky eye and her traveling partner (son?) named Dave or Dan or Dale pick him up in an Idaho cornfield and give him a ride to the Lakeside Motel in Buffalo, Wyoming.
• Jamie meets Lewis Williams, a transgender man living at Lakeside. Lewis feeds him, gives him a place to stay for a couple of days, and sends him off with forty bucks.
• A man named Luther picks Jamie up and drives him across Nebraska, dropping him off in a town called Lisco.
• Jamie scores a free room at the Lisco Best Western by telling the guy at the desk that his dad's coming to pay for the room. He goes to eat at a restaurant called the Country Kitchen next to the motel.
• A man named Will comes into the restaurant and says Jamie looks like a model. He offers to pay Jamie a hundred dollars to do a photo shoot, and Jamie does. Surprisingly, everything turns out okay, and Will drives Jamie to Ogalalla, Nebraska.
• Jamie proceeds to get drunk on Best Western mini-bar booze at a rest stop. A guy named Kent picks him up.
• Kent and Jamie travel across Illinois together. When they stop at a motel, they meet up with Kent's ex-wife Marty and go out for a fancy dinner.
• Marty comes to the motel and picks Jamie up the next day while Kent's out. She takes him to a place called Santa's Village, where she pretends he's her son who died shortly after birth.
• Jamie freaks out over Marty's weirdness. They get in a physical fight in her car and he walks back to the motel.
• He and Kent travel to Joliet, where Kent's daughter, Albertina, comes to stay at their motel for the night.
• Kent goes out and Jamie and Albertina have sex. Jamie's pretty sure he's in love, but the next morning, Kent and Albertina leave without waking Jamie up.
• Jamie buys another Greyhound ticket and makes it to Memphis, where P is unconscious. P dies shortly thereafter.
• At P's funeral, Jamie sits far away on a hill in the cemetery. His family doesn't see him.
• Jamie moves in with Jorge, P's partner, to start a new life in Memphis.
