Waverly Place Jong a.k.a. "Meimei" Timeline and Summary

  • Waverly cries because she wants salted plums, and her mom tells her to get a grip on herself. When she keeps quiet next time, the salted plums are hers.
  • At her church's annual Christmas party, she sits on Santa's lap. Her present is a big pack of Life Savers, while her brother receives a chess set.
  • She asks her brother to teach her the game, and soon starts studying chess books at the library. As a result, she starts beating her brothers at chess, to the point that they won't play with her anymore.
  • At the playground, Waverly asks an old man, Lau Po, to play against her. He beats her most of the time, but in return she learns how to step up her game.
  • Matches in the playground become a regular thing for Waverly. Her mother tells everyone that Waverly's winning streak is pure luck, not the result of her mad skills (or, for that matter, her intense study of the game).
  • Mom gives Waverly a tablet (it's a charm, not a computer) at her first tournament. Waverly wins the match by besting an older boy from Oakland.
  • She is the champion and receives a trophy and a new chess set. Sweet deal, with only one downer: Mom's not satisfied, and tells her to win next time by a larger margin.
  • Waverly's next win is more impressive, and Mom decides that her advice works.
  • Mom makes Waverly's big brothers do all of her chores. The new chore monkeys are not amused.
  • Waverly turns nine and becomes a national chess champion.
  • Life takes her picture during a tournament against a sweaty elderly man.
  • While the rest of the world marvels at her talents, Mom hovers over Waverly while she practices and makes irritating and critical noises.
  • Waverly goes shopping with Mom on Saturdays. Mom keeps introducing her to total strangers as a chess champion.
  • Waverly tells Mom that she doesn't want to be paraded around like a trophy, and Mom gets angry because she thinks Waverly is ashamed of her. She doesn't see that Waverly is sick and tired of being a human trophy.
  • Waverly get angry back.
  • Waverly pulls away from Mom and knocks over an old woman's grocery bag; she runs away while Mom stops to help.
  • Waverly runs until she's tired and realizes that she's on an endless track to nowhere.
  • When Waverly arrives home, Mom tells everyone to give her the cold shoulder. Ooh, burn.
  • Waverly goes upstairs to her room and imagines her mom as a scary giant beating her at chess. As her pieces fall, Waverly quasi-escapes the room by envisioning herself floating up and out the window.
  • She is free and alone in the night sky, and begins to ponder her next move in the game that is life.
