Seven was directed by David Fincher

If you want someone to direct your family friendly summer cartoon, David Fincher is not your man. But, if your movie is about someone who creates a family friendly summer cartoon by day and paints animation cels with the blood of victims tied up in his basement by night, then Fincher might consider it.

After directing the critical failure and fan least favorite Alien 3 (at least until Alien: Resurrection came along), Fincher returned to directing music videos with Madonna and the Rolling Stones. Seven lured him back to the big screen, and it was such a hit that it paved the way for Fincher to bring pretty much any grisly vision he had to life.

Fincher would later work with Brad Pitt again in Fight Club (1999) and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) and tackle bloody murders, real-world serial killers, and other sociopaths in Gone Girl (2014), Zodiac (2007), and his scariest movie, The Social Network (2010).

Seven is a brutally dark film, but it seems like his work is getting even darker, with his adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011), and even Spacey-er, with his ongoing Netflix hit House of Cards (2013 – present).

So, if your day is a little too cheery and sunny and happy, stream something directed by David Fincher. He's sure to cast a dark, disturbing cloud that will stick with you for years.
