  • Sadna patches Nailer up, and then he and his crew celebrate his good luck with a bonfire and some booze.
  • When Nailer returns to his hut, his father threatens him with violence, but Nailer pacifies him by offering him the rest of the booze.
  • In the morning, Nailer realizes that the storm is there, and he tries to wake his father up. Unable to do so, he gets Sadna to help, and he and Pima run to safety.
  • After the storm, Nailer and Sadna are looking for food and they come upon a downed clipper ship.
  • Overjoyed at their fortune, the duo scavenge the ship and find a girl who is almost dead; Nailer decides to rescue her.
  • The girl recovers, and Nailer decides that he's going to throw his fortune in with hers and get off Bright Sands Beach.
  • The next day, Nailer's father finds them and the clipper ship and takes Nita (a.k.a. the girl a.k.a. Lucky Girl) and Pima hostage.
  • Nailer gets the antibiotics that he desperately needs for his infected shoulder, and when he finally awakens, he decides to flee and, in the process of doing so, kills Blue Eyes, his father's henchwoman. He realizes that his father will never forgive him for this betrayal.
  • Nailer, Nita, and Tool catch a train to Orleans. Once there, they find work and look for a ship captain whom Nita knows is trustworthy.
  • When Nailer is working, he sees his father in Orleans. He finds Nita, who has figured out she can trust the captain of Dauntless.
  • Nailer swims to the ship and presents his case to Captain Candless. Once they look for Nita at the places Nailer, Tool, and Nita called home, though, Tool appears and says that Nailer's father has taken Nita.
  • Although Tool tries to convince him otherwise, Nailer decides to stay with Captain Candless and search for Nita.
  • While aboard, Nailer makes himself useful in the machinery room, and Knot, a half-man, teaches him to read.
  • After a few days, Dauntless catches up with the ship they think has Nita, and Nailer and the rest of the crew realize that it's a trap.
  • Because they're near his old stomping grounds of Bright Sands Beach, Nailer suggests steering into the Teeth to trap the warship that's chasing them. So they do.
  • As the warship founders, Nailer boards it and searches for Nita, only to find that his father has captured her.
  • Nailer's father attacks him with a machete and chases him into the hydrofoil room. There, Nailer flips a switch that sets the gears in motion (literally) to kill his father.
  • Then, Nailer frees Nita, they make their way out of the ship, and they swim for Dauntless.
  • Recovering on the beach after the adventure, Nailer confesses his guilt over killing his dad to Sadna. He plans to sail with the rest of the Dauntless crew and Nita when it leaves.
