- Grace's dad comes home with good news: he got a raise, so Grace is getting a new car!
- She's excited because “a car like that means freedom” (6.17) but she also wants to spend more time with her distant parents.
- That night, Grace hears the white wolf pacing around the deck. Grace actually snarls at her, and the wolf goes back into the woods.
- Grace goes back to bed and falls asleep smelling of wolf: “pine needles, cold rain, earthy perfume, coarse bristles […] It was almost like he was there” (6.26).
