Siddhartha Setting

Where It All Goes Down

India, Approximately 625 BC

We hate to break it to you, but if you were looking for a techno-futurist romp through cyborg territory this is not the book for you.

If, on the other hand, you love history and philosophy...

Siddhartha takes place in various small towns, gardens, groves, forests, and along an unnamed river in India at the time of the Buddha, approximately 625 BC.

The action takes place over the greater part of Siddhartha’s lifetime. Siddhartha and most of the other central characters are Brahman, members of India’s priest caste, and are preoccupied with finding spiritual awakening. The setting in Siddhartha is almost entirely reduced to its symbolic qualities—for example, Siddhartha experiences pleasure with Kamala in the pleasure-garden. (No word on what happens in the horror-garden.)
