There's not really one main antagonist in the book; the entire system is against the inmates. The Nazi mindset that Jews are less than human justifies to them their savage treatment of the prisoners. Characters within the camp, like the Prominenz and the Kapos, make life in the camp a constant series of life-and-death struggles for Primo and the other prisoners.
