The Alchemist Act 3, Scene 1 Summary

  • Ananias returns to the house with his pastor, Tribulation Wholesome.
  • As they stand outside the door, Ananias tells Wholesome that he doesn't trust Subtle and he thinks the philosopher's stone "is a work of darkness."
  • Wholesome says he agrees but then he convinces Ananias that they've got to do whatever it takes to raise money to further "their holy cause," even if it means dealing with a bunch of heathens.
  • Ananias knocks at the door. (Yep, that's Jonson's way of saying the Anabaptists are hypocrites.)
