Christopher Newman Timeline and Summary

  • Newman wanders around the Louvre and admires the artwork, along with Noémie Nioche's workmanship on a copy of a painting.
  • After paying Noémie beaucoup bucks to make him his own copy, Newman runs into his old war pal Tom Tristram.
  • Tristram invites him home to meet his wife, the most excellent Mrs. Tristram.
  • Mrs. Tristram offers to introduce Newman to her beautiful friend, Claire de Cintre.
  • Newman leaps at the opportunity. He meets Claire at Mrs. Tristram's house and falls in love.
  • Next thing we know, Newman is hanging out all the time with Claire and her brother, Valentin.
  • Newman proposes to Claire, but she puts him off until she knows him a bit better.
  • In the meantime, Newman gets Claire's family on board.
  • He proposes again and is successful. Score!
  • The de Bellegardes throw Newman and Claire an engagement party.
  • Newman starts to become suspicious that the de Bellegardes are against the match.
  • Newman attends an opera and tries to warn Valentin off of a duel.
  • All of a sudden, Claire tells Newman she can't be with him.
  • Newman doesn't even have time to think about that, because he's off to support Valentin on his deathbed. The duel didn't go well.
  • On his deathbed, Valentin confides to Newman that there's a deep, dark family secret. Knowledge is power.
  • Newman tries to convince Claire to go through with the wedding. Alas, she's decided to become a nun.
  • Newman makes a last-ditch effort to see Claire at the convent, but can't catch a glimpse.
  • Newman tries to blackmail the Bellegarde family with the secret (poison, murder) but decides not to go through with it.
  • Instead, Newman heads off to London to chill out.
  • There, he catches a glimpse of Noémie.
  • Back in France, Newman forlornly walks by Claire's convent.
  • He burns the incriminating letter in the presence of Mrs. Tristram. The deed is done.
