- Mr. Pontellier finally comes home from the club at about 11 p.m. Edna is already asleep.
- Mr. Pontellier piles his money on the dresser and talks to Edna while he undresses, but she is too sleepy to respond.
- Mr. Pontellier is irritated that Edna doesn’t hanging on to his every word.
- Mr. Pontellier neglected to bring home bonbons and peanuts for his young sons, but he goes in to check on them.
- He returns to Edna with the news that Raoul has a high fever.
- Edna has trouble believing this, so her husband plays the Bad Mother card.
- Finally Edna jumps out of bed to check on Raul.
- Mr. Pontellier goes to sleep after smoking yet another cigar.
- Edna, however, is now wide awake. She goes out to the porch and cries.
- Such experiences had never before bothered her, but for some reason tonight she feels oppressed.
- In the morning, Mr. Pontellier goes off to his job in New Orleans (he goes there during the week, even during their summer vacation time, and then returns to Grand Isle for the weekend).
- Before departing, he generously hands over half the money he won at the club the night before.
- Edna plans to use the money for her sister’s benefit. (The sister who is engaged.)
- We learn that Mr. Pontellier is popular among ladies, men, children, and even nurses. All these assorted people turn out to watch Mr. Pontellier leave.
- A few days later, a box arrives for Edna filled with all kinds of candy and fruit and wine. She shares with everyone.
- All the ladies are convinced that Mr. Pontellier is the world’s greatest husband.
- Edna has to admit that she knows of none better.
