Thomas Timeline & Summary

  • Thomas wakes up in isolation. There's nothing but white walls and frustration.
  • Janson (Rat Man) finally opens the door on the 26th day, and Thomas is reunited with his friends.
  • After being told he's going to have his memory returned, Thomas refuses the procedure and is put in a separate room with Minho and Newt, who have also refused.
  • Thomas tries to fight his way out of the procedure the next day but fails. Luckily, Brenda turns out to be an employee of WICKED, and she helps him escape.
  • Thomas breaks out of his surgery room with Brenda, and they gather Minho and Newt. They rush to the hangar where they find Jorge, who is also an employee of WICKED—not to mention, conveniently, a great pilot.
  • After some James Bond-style action, our heroes get to the Berg and fly away. Unfortunately for Thomas, he gets popped by a Launcher just as he's entering the Berg. So he has a rough few minutes.
  • Thomas recovers from the Launcher shot, and the Berg flies to Denver. Newt stays on the Berg because he has the Flare, but the rest leave because they're all immune.
  • When Thomas exits the Berg, he's immediately given a letter from Gally, a kid who used to be in the Maze. Thomas, Minho, Brenda, and Jorge take a cab to Gally's house. They learn that Gally's part of a rebellious group called the Right Arm (they hate WICKED). Thomas agrees to help Gally, but first he has to get the WICKED computer chip out of his brain.
  • Our heroes take another cab to see Brenda's friend Hans, who used to work for WICKED. At Hans's place, Thomas and Minho have their chips removed (though Thomas puts up a fight, since WICKED has started controlling his body).
  • After leaving Hans's house, our heroes all grab a quick bite to eat at a coffee shop. Thomas gets caught staring at an infected dude; then he gets held hostage by a bounty hunter who figures out that Thomas is immune to the Flare.
  • Luckily for Thomas, the bounty hunter doesn't hold him hostage for long; a machine controlled by WICKED shoots him down and delivers a message from Janson.
  • Janson tell Thomas he's the Final Candidate and needs to return to WICKED. Also, Newt's in trouble.
  • Thomas rushes back to the Berg with his friends, only to find that Newt has been taken away.
  • Our heroes fly their Berg to Crank Palace, a magical kingdom with roller coaster rides and Mickey Mouse and pure happiness.
  • Just kidding, Crank Palace is a madhouse of Cranks roaming around going crazy.
  • Our heroes find Newt, but he tells them to go away. He's gone completely nutso. Despite a long argument, they're all forced to leave Newt to wallow in his craziness, and they return to the airport.
  • Thomas can't catch a break. When our heroes get back to the Berg, they're all immediately taken hostage again.
  • This time, the gang's taken hostage by the Right Arm—oddly enough—and they meet up with Teresa and some other Glader pals.
  • Minho starts a quick mutiny, and Thomas is able to get a Right Arm member to drive him to the boss's headquarters. There, Thomas agrees to help the Right Arm infiltrate WICKED's headquarters.
  • On the van ride to the Right Arm's hangar, Thomas sees Newt on the highway. Hey, Newt.
  • The reunion isn't so happy: Newt begs Thomas to kill him. Thomas kills him.
  • Thomas is distraught now, but he makes it to the hangar. There, he's flown via Berg to WICKED's headquarters.
  • Thomas knocks on WICKED's door: Hello? Anybody home? Trick or treat?
  • Janson answers, and he informs Thomas that WICKED needs his brain. Sweet.
  • Despite some clever stalling, Thomas is sedated by a WICKED physician.
  • But when he wakes up, Thomas realizes he just woke up. Meaning that he's alive.
  • Thomas finds a letter from Chancellor Paige, who says she stopped the procedure. Also, the Right Arm is planning to blow the whole headquarters down.
  • The plan: find the immune people WICKED was hiding, get everyone to a hidden Flat Trans, then live happily ever after.
  • Thomas finds his friends and rushes to the Maze—where 200 or more Munies are being held. Thomas rounds them up and sends them to the Flat Trans. Unfortunately, the explosives from the Right Arm start going off at this moment.
  • The Munies all make a run for it, and a lot of people are crushed by falling ceiling tiles.
  • Eventually, our heroes reach the Griever pod room, which is right near the exit.
  • The Grievers come to life, and Thomas is forced to fight them off.
  • Luckily, no one important dies, and our heroes all make it to the Flat Trans.
  • Right as Thomas is about to go through, Janson appears with his guards.
  • The battle you knew was coming comes: Thomas and his pals, of course, obliterate Janson and his guards. Thomas ends up strangling Janson to death.
  • Finally. Well, not finally. A ceiling tile is about to fall on Thomas, but Teresa pushes him out of the way, sacrificing herself.
  • So, yeah—Thomas then watches Teresa die.
  • Oh, well. He moves on and runs through the Flat Trans.
  • On the other side is exactly what Chancellor Paige promised: a paradise.
  • Brenda shuts down the Flat Trans, and it seems like everything is going to be okay. Thomas has made it to paradise with a bunch of immune people, and they can start their own civilization.
