Donne Something Naughty?

Symbol Analysis

*cough* *cough* Sex *cough* *cough.* It may be under the covers, but sex is all over this poem, in puns, synonyms, and with double entendre. This sneakiness—hey, the waking souls are all out in the open!—implies that sex isn't what love is all about. For more on why sex is linked with children, head over to "Sex" under "Themes."

  • Line 2: Like all double entendres, this baby's got two meanings. And one's a baby. The speaker laughs that he and his girl must have been babies before they found each other. But "weaned" also brings to mind some not-so-innocent pastimes.
  • Line 3: Once again, this can be read straight, as a reference to breastfeeding. But if you pick up on the "country" pun (which can't be printed here), it takes on a much smuttier meaning.
