Anselme Timeline and Summary

  • Anselme doesn't show his face in this play until the final act.
  • When he shows up to marry Élise, he learns that Élise doesn't want the marriage and says that he isn't willing to marry someone against their will.
  • When Valère claims that he is descended from an Italian nobleman named Don Thomas D'Alburcy, Anselme claims that this can't be true, since Thomas' family was lost in a shipwreck many years ago.
  • Valère offers proof that he is in fact Don Thomas' son. At this point, Mariane reveals that she is Don Thomas' daughter. And Anselme says "Oh, what the heck" and reveals that he is actually Don Thomas himself.
  • He gives his blessing for Mariane's marriage to Cléante and for Valère's to Élise.
  • Harpagon, however, won't be satisfied unless there's something in it for him. To this end, Anselme (Don Thomas) pays him off to make sure everyone gets what they want.
  • He even promise to buy Harpagon a new suits of clothes.
