Master Jacques Timeline and Summary

  • Jacques shows up as both Harpagon's cook and carriage driver.
  • When ordered to prepare a meal for ten guests, Jacques insists that he'll need money for ingredients.
  • When told to drive the horses, Jacques says he won't drive them until they're properly fed. In both cases, he seems saucy. But he's actually the only person who actually cares about Harpagon.
  • When he tells Harpagon the truth about what people say about him, Jacques gets himself beaten up by his boss.
  • When Valère laughs at him for this, Jacques tries to act tough, but only ends up getting himself another beat-down.
  • After this beating, he swears revenge on Valère.
  • When he comes upon Harpagon fighting with Cléante, Jacques decides that he will play judge and reconcile them.
  • All he ends up doing, though, is telling each of them a lie that takes them less than a minute to figure out.
  • The next time we see Jacques, he lies about seeing Valère steal Harpagon's cashbox.
  • This lie is also figured out eventually, but Jacques is saved from punishment by Anselme, who convinces Harpagon to take pity on him.
