Character Analysis

On the Road Again

Therese and Carol meet a few minor characters on the road, but we don't really get to know them because our leading ladies don't stay in one place too long. They hang out with a seventy-year-old woman named Mrs. French who likes to eat "shredded wheat and hot milk" (18.31), the breakfast of champions. And when Carol leaves Therese, Therese moves in to a room in the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Cooper who has been taking renters for fifteen years. These women, and the others they meet on their journey, give us tiny peeks into the little lives of women across the U.S. at this time period.
