The Ropemaker Chapter 4 Summary

The River

  • Just so you know, Part 2 is called "Faheel"—like the magician Tilja was just told to go find.
  • Tilja's Da expresses the annoyance he's gone through over all the years dealing with his wife's magic surprises (4.3). He's not keen on his daughter running around the Empire, but Til vows to return home to Woodbourne (4.6).
  • Tilja's Ma tells her about a dream she had about the unicorns. The one that gave her a lump on the head wasn't "one of ours" (1.18), she says, and was some rogue unicorn instead. Huh. Plus things are screwed-up in the forest (4.27).
  • The traveling quartet—Tahl, Alnor, Tilja, and Meena—take a raft down a river to get to the border of the Empire so the guys don't have to get sick going through the forest (4.62). The guys are the river folk and take control of the raft, but teach Tilja and Meena how to guide the raft in case the guys pass out cold (4.67).
  • Calico, Tilja's spunky horse, spies a "friend" on the cliffs (4.83)—turns out it was some sort of weird-looking unicorn (4.92).
  • When the guys pass out from going through the forest, Tilja and Meena take over the steering of the raft (4.93). Meena reminisces about a cute young guy she dated years ago and wishes they hadn't had their separate duties—she had to stay at the family farm and chat with the cedars (4.121).
  • Tilja zonks out when the group rests for the night, and generally likes chilling on the river at night (4.131).
