This one's a softball: here we have the story of Jaromir Hladik. We know him, and we love him, that's for sure. But bonus: we also get inside his head and learn about his neuroses and deepest insecurities. How's that for intimacy? In fact, his mental activity provides the most important action of the story. After all, the "secret miracle" is an event that occurs entirely within Jaromir's brain. Even though we're pretty sure our guy isn't going to survive his firing squad execution, we're still rooting for him.
