• Owls bring Eustace and Jill to Puddleglum's wigwam in the middle of the night.
• He consults with the children about the mission and they set off to cross Ettinsmoor.
• Puddleglum warns the children that the giants' bridge is probably enchanted and dangerous, but they don't listen.
• He gets a bad vibe from the Lady of the Green Kirtle and the silent Black Knight, and speaks defensively to them; he agrees to take the children to Harfang but doesn't like it.
• As they struggle over the hill of trenches, Puddleglum asks Jill to recite the signs, but she cant.
• At Harfang, the porter offers Puddleglum a strong liquor and he gets drunk.
• Puddleglum overhears the giants talking about the venison they are eating for lunch and discovers that it's talking stag—he is horrified.
